Introduction
--- That Wladimir Paley was a young poet of great promise, there cannot be any doubt. His translation in Alexandrine verses in French, of Grand Duke Constantine's tragedy "The Tsar of Judaea" was a remarkeable feat. Sadly many of his best works were lost during the revolution, but enough has survived to enable us to regret the untimely death of a possibly great Russian poet. Among the verse in Russian we know of "Sappho" a long poem composed between August 1916 and October 1917 and another poem "Annunciation" composed in October 1917, Other vedrse were "Andreevsky Cathedral", a sonnet written on December 23 o.st. 1916, some minor verse written in 1916/1917 such as "A Fairy Tale", "Phantoms", "Poets" and "Night Time"
--- On the day Wladimir Paley refused Uritsky's offer to disown as father Grand Duke Paul, so as to avoid being exiled to the Urals with the other Romanovs he becomes by right a Romanov. Not he a man to say, as did in 1917 Grand Duke Kirill Wladimirovich: I am ashamed to belong to the Romanov family.
In a time of danger Wladimir Paley on the contrary chose to show he was proud of being a Romanov. For this reason, I consider that since March 1918 His Serene Highness Prince Wladimir Pavlovich Paley, became His Highness Prince Wladimir Pavlovich of Russia. A posthumous but well deserved recognition. (HP)

Childhood and Adolescence

1897
--- Birth at St. Petersburg on January 21 n.st. of Wladimir, son of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich and of Olga Valerianovna von Pistohlkors, then wife of Col. Erik von Pistohlkors. (HP)
--- Since, to the best of my knowledge, at the time of the birth of Wladimir, Olga Valerianovna was not yet divorced, the son without doubt could only be registered under the family name of von Pistohlkors. which explains the opinions which later expressed both Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra. (HP)

1901
--- Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna and her brother Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich
noticed on their father's desk, in small gold frame the photograph of boy four or five years old with long curls and a dress down to the ankles. When they asked who it was Grand Duke Paul began to talk of some..........
