Early Years
After Grand Duchess
Maria Mikhailovna, died in 1846 in Vienna, her sister Catherine, the
only surviving child of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich and of Grand Duchess
Elena Pavlovna became their nineteen year old daughter Catherine.
Grand Duke Mikhail did not live to see his daughter marry Duke George
of Mecklenburg and died at Warsaw on September 9th, 1848 n.st.
When Grand Duchess Catherine became engaged to marry a Duke of Mecklenburg,
it was decided that also these descendants of Emperor Paul should be
brought up as thoroughly Russian princes, and with the Leuchtenbergs
already firmly established in Russia, form a kind of princely halo to
the main Romanov line.
The marriage of Grand Duchess Catherine, not yet 24, with Duke Georg
of Mecklenburg. who was 27 at the time, was celebrated in St.Petersburg
on February 16th, 1851 n.st.
For a minor German princeling, to serve in the Russian armed forces
was a golden opportunity for a military career which could promise quick
advancement, which George of Mecklenburg seized immediately. After the
the death of Emperor Nicholas I and the end of the Crimean war his first
child, Helen was born at St.Petersburg on January 16th, 1857 n.st. Two
years later on June 6th, 1859 n.st., was born at Remplin, Germany, Duke
Georg-Alexander, followed by Duchess Marie-Friederike who was born and
died in her infancy in 1861.
1863
Duke Mikhail Georgievich, the subject of this Episodic Biography was

beyond Peterhof. ( HP )
