Introduction
--- In the chronological listing of events in the following chapters, important family occasions such as weddings and funerals are always noted. With births of the closest relatives, these were all occasions for visiting one's relatives. Are also registered family events occurring in childhood or adolescence since children were often taken along by their parents to meet relatives, as occasions to arrange suitable marriages and make friends of their age. Something not too easy in the case of Jelena Karadjordjevich, due to the frequent dynastic upheavals in the Balkans !
For the years of exile, I have noted down all family events, even when the generation gap was growing, as she always wanted to hear news about most of her relatives.
I have omitted in this Episodic Biography of aunt "Jabe" the usual Personality Summary "Episode" for a very simple reason. I have been unable to discover in any source available;e to me the slightest reference to the personality of aunt "Jabe". I have known aunt Jabe since my childhood but had never seen her frequently. I remember only her rather broad face and she seemed to me very "Montenegrin", she did resemble her aunts Helen, Queen of Italy and Xenia of Montenegro. I vaguely feel that she had a rather patronising manner of speaking with my father - just an impression.
Not tall, rather plumpish with eyes like burning coal, intelligent, vivacious. Very congenial when she spoke of events of her life. An overwhelming personality. Among other things she told Sveva, that she had seen the Tsar's four daughters with heads shaved after their illness at Tsarskoe Selo. I do not know how truthful she was in the details ls.

Childhood and Adolescence
1884
--- Birth of Jelena Karadjordjevich at Rijeka, Montenegro, on November 5 n.st. (HP)

1884 / 1885
--- A photograph identified by Princess Xenia of Montenegro. (Image n°1) The caption on the back mentions that the photograph was been made on the day "Jabe" was christened. And indeed, on the left can seen a procession of women and men, a group of members of the clergy, one or two horses mounted by men, a man or two bearing a standart. All are followiung a zigzagging path which disappears behind the larger whitewashed house in which lived Peter Karadjordjevich and his wife Zorka. On several windows can be seen flags. O)ne of the flags seems a Karadjordjevich banner. The path reappears from behind the larger house and reaches the church. Some men can be seen besides the church. Over the entrance to the church a small belfry topped by a flagstaff flying the Monetegrin flag. Jabe was the first grandchild of Prince Nikola and Princess Milena, born when Milena was 37 and her daughter Zorka was not yet 20. After the birth of her first granddaughter........
